      • Hey guys, first off id like to apologize for taking so long to get this up for you guys. Some of you may know I was lucky enough to get invited to this EA SPORTS FAN FIRST EVENT held at the MGM casino this past weekend for UFC 173. It included an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas for the event itself, presser event for UFC 175 Weidman vs Machida, weigh ins for UFC 173 and of course hands on with the final version of EA SPORTS UFC.

Walking around the MGM I seen wand, rumble, hughes, trigg, jon anik, I seen TJ the before the weigh ins walking with bang Ludwig. Later that night I took an elevator after the weigh ins up to my room n lawler was in the elevator standing next to me. Haha wished him luck. once at the event they had an openbar, free food. and meet and greet with UFC champion Chris Weidman. we all got autographed UFC gloves and a pic. all in all i had alot of fun.

I got about just under 3 hours with the game so I tried to dive into the game and get as much info as possible for you guys. There was no video allowed so I was only able to snap a few photos with my crappy phone so i apologize fore bad images. i tried bumping contrast on a few of em to make em more legible. and even then it died not too far into my time with the game so a lot of my info is gonna be just that. Info. My first impressions with the game were phenomenal. Visually and presentation wise the game blew me away. Gameplay wise as well I had a ton of fun playing with the game. I played this game with an open mind. i wasnt there to point out all the flaws so i just wanted to have fun with it. I preferred the ufc undisputed series. But after playing this you can definitely tell that it was a good mix between the two. Sadly I wasn’t able to play PvP only against Cpu. Even then it was great.

        My biggest take aways.

-game is not set in stone as an 18 month or biannual. Hayes explained it definitely wont be a yearly like madden. (not enough time to add anything substantial)

-certain fighters that should be in, will be eventually. But I thought Hayes said certain fighters will be released for free. And others will be DLC. Only ex he gave was TJ. But of course EA is the deciding factor. I know for sure he said that any stat updates will be released in updates not DLC. So im expecting to pay for guys like Johnson and arlovski but not for guys like sanchez n dillashaw. But again you never know.

-they’ve licensed near everyones actual walkout songs. Certain ones they weren’t able to get.

-stamina is the same for both sped and real time clock speeds (not too worried about it tho. You have to conserve your stamina a bit better making it more realistic)

-guys slow down in the later rounds, depending on weight it may happen quicker or if you are spamming punches.

-ground game feels a bit more towards ea mma with the one button blocks and get up button. but still gets more complex with stalls and reversals.

-heavier weights felt slower and more powerful than the lighter weights

-finishing the fight felt like a reward. I think the days of ko-ing a guy in round 1-2 are over. There will be much more dec wins

-you can land a few shots after the fights over but it usually is from a ground position. If someone is clean ko’d from standing that’s when its over. Ref occasionally intervenes but not all the time

-blood splashes onto the mat, smears on the gloves and faces of fighters. If it did disappear I didn’t notice it.

-reach seems to play a bigger part. Fighting long armed guys against smaller armed guys meant you could get out of the way quicker. That being said you can still close the distance and land hooks for the smaller armed fighter.

-takedowns are easy to stuff. Creating a more realistic need to set up the takedown. Theres no struggle. Only your reflexes in stuffing or if you leave yourself open from a looping hook or shot. You can also kick a guys foot from under him tripping him. Another example of this is if pettis goes for a capoeira kick you can kick his hand from under him causing him to fall.

-sways are a mix of FNC and UFC3.not as clunky as UFC but not as smooth as FNC STC

-all roster fighters have one gameplan always assigned to them for online and off. same goes with your caf. theyll always have the first slot you made as a default.

-couldnt figure out taunts or touch glove animations. if they are in they might be involuntary when not pressing any strikes.

-caf seems limited customization wise. Pre placed tattoos are a bust. But you can have neck tattoos. =) gameface sounds very promising.

        CONTROLS

        STRIKING:

Ok standing in this game felt amazing to me. I was blown away with how well they mixed FNC, UFC, EA MMA into one cohesive game. Punching was done using square and triangle, (PS4). And there were modifiers using L1 and R1. One was a strength modifier while the other was more of a signature modifier. And of course different direction input from the joystick changed the punches accordingly. Uppercuts were performed by holding away from the opponent on the L stick and punching (sq,tr), while hooks were performed the same while holding the L stick towards your opponent. Jabs were performed by just pressing the button itself. You can step in n jab if you like. But if you’re holding the stick forward n try to jab they’ll do a different strike. Overhands, frontkicks, etc were performed using the signature modifier. (IE. Travis browne had his front kick he used against reem). The kicks were fun as well. They definitely felt like they are gonna play a bigger role in gameplans. Chopping someone down felt like an accomplishment it slows guys down you see them limping. Reactions were great. Regular quick legkicks were performed by just simply pressing the button. A stronger leg kick was performed by holding the L stick down (not clicked down pointed down) and hitting the kick button (x,o) . headkicks were performed by holding away from the opponent and hitting the kick button (x,o) and of course all the flashy front kicks sinning kicks were performed using the signature modifier. Ground strikes felt a little on the slow/weak side in certain positions but it was still very fun. Landing elbows ont eh ground was fun. Had to hold L1+L2 then strike to do the elbows. But if you were in a dominant position like full mount you’re free to rain down hammer fists and elbows. Looked better had a bit of weight to the strikes. sways were in the game but i didnt get too much into it. sadly i didnt get much on them. but THEY ARE IN. they dont look like the sways of the past. kinda a good mix of FNC and UFC3.

        BLOCKING:

Blocking was performed by using R2 as a gen block. Of course the damaged blocked has A LOT to do with you stats and stamina as well. You have to block very specific. Its not just high low block to do parrys you have to hold a left and right as well in order to perform a parry to its fullest. Of course I suppose if you wanted to you can hold it down but you will be getting hurt if you are just holding it. I can say that IT IS HARD to perform a perfect parry. So I don’t think that will be an issue with spamming. I got maybe like one or two in like 3-4 fights. Blocking was a different story. But even then you still had to do it by timing it. It’s hard to explain. So you can def hold block but can’t get way with just holding it down the whole time. N in order to create those openings n catch your opponent you have to time it almost exactly. Seems like a tough thing to master but im sure ppl will get good at it over time.

        CLINCH/GROUND:

So this is where things went out the window for me. I had fun doing the ground stuff but it was definitely frustrating at first, it had a good mix between UFC3 n something new. It was left and right transitions based on your position and perspective from the cam. You have to think of it from the viewer perspective not the fighters. So if you’re on top you perform the right transition n the fighter moves towards the right. (keep in mind it’s not his right but yours) same goes for the clinch. Except the clinch one might be more like just control his left n right hands respectively. I believe underhooks were performed by holding down L2 and aiming the R stick towards your opponent, over under was L1 with the R stick towards your opponent, and Thai clinch was L1+L2 with the R stick towards your opponent. Takedowns were performed by holding L2 and transitioning with the R stick in a quarter circle motion, while power takedowns n slams were performed the same way except you hold down L1+L2 while doing the quarter circle transition. Transitioning on the ground was pretty fun. You can reverse your opponent by basically preforming the same transition. While blocking is more of an ea mma way of a simple one button block. But you cant get way with just holdin it. Anyways theres a weird bit of time gap. Like you do the quarter circle motion as ive stated. But you have to wait for your player to reach into that direction then perform the quarter circle turn. You cant just input the quarter circle n he does it. So it almost makes you perform these motions of im transitioning this way. I found this VERY interesting cuz you can create these moments of stalls and fake transitions by simply just not performing the quarter circle motion with the R stick n just the initial movement of going to your left or right. I wasn’t able to do very much against the cage I got a single collar and thai clinch against the cage but it was very brief. Looked good. They pulled the head down as they lifted their knee. Not robotic at all IMO. Transitioning was the same left or right directions. You can do footstomps and uppercuts. Knees. Being against the cage was cool too. It bent inward as you hit the opponent. A lot more noticeable than UFC3. Sometimes the camera angle would cause the fence to disappear but it was more of letting you see whats going on rather than a glitch. Ground game feels more towards the ea mma side of the two. The reason I say this is because of the one button transition blocking and the one button stand up button. Of course the attacker can do the same. And he can also block any given transition or reverse it by implementing the same inputs.

        SUBMISSIONS:

So this is the thing a lot of ppl were worried about. I can shed a bit of light on this. The HUD is completely transparent. Just to be clear. You can still see what’s going on. Now the mechanics of the submission itself are pretty interesting. I can confidently say it really does make sense. And it is the best take on a sub system thus far as it is done in stages. Now how many stages it takes is left to the stamina and points allotted in those respective categories. I only got the chance to perform attempts on the cpu so I wasn’t able to pull one off but I did get a good feel for how it works. Its less of a “cat n mouse”, and less of a “simon says” as it was made out to be in previous articles. You initiate the sub by holding down R1 and transitioning towards the left of right as you would a ground transition. For the attacker left and right trans could mean different submissions types. Depending on the player and the position you are in. For the defender, blocking the sub attempt was performed by holding R1 and pushing the R stick upward. Once the attacker has initiated the sub he has to stop the defenders attempts of escaping. So youre basically playing off of the defender. the defender pushes the R stick in the direction he wishes (L,U,R,D) to escape the sub, (I don’t think it has too much to do with the way he escapes the sub in game but more for the sake of the mini game) and the attacker has to match his input and hold in that direction to stop him. Of course this is where it gets a little tricky as the defender can bait him into thinking hes gonna escape a certain direction then change. Hes constantly trying to “fill up a meter” once that meters filled he escapes. But at the same time the defender is trying to get this bar ”filled” the attacker is looking for those popup icons. And its quick. When they said it’s a quick flash they mean it. You really have to have a quick reaction to those moments otherwise youll lose the battle. If the attacker happens to hit that flash popup the bar starts at the bottom again n the defender has to fill it up again. As far as the overall feel. It seemed like when it was described in the past it was this long struggle. It’s a fast paced sub game so it wont take long. Keeps you guessing and on your toes. A lot of fun I enjoyed it.

        CAF MODE:

This is something im a BIG part of a lot of ppl know me as an avid CAF creator. So this was one of the first things I jumped into after the initial mode checkouts. I was both impressed but let down. Some things I just thought were great. The detail in the cafs was insane. They look on part if not equal to the roster guys. You can hardly tell the difference which is something that has bugged the crap outta me in every past mma game to date. Here are some facts about customization

Gameface: I was told that this gameface was A LOT better than previous generations. that guys in studio were creating realistic fighters with guys missing from the game and to test the gameface even further they used images of tigers and lions n created animalistic facial fighters. Stating it looked like a like and lion and tiger were fighting. Haha well have to see how good the gameface is this time around but im optimistic.

-Faces are done using gameface then swatches (ala EA MMA) 41 in total ( confirming no facial sliders =/ )

-25 hairstyles (very realistic style and color wise. nothing stupid. Bendos ponytail, guidas long hair were some of the styles)

        -11 eyebrows

-16 facial hair styles including mustaches and beards (one category)

        -5 body hair styles

Of course you could edit the basic things, name, WC, skin color, exact weight, gear, skills, moves, stats up to 100 in insta caf mode. Along with gameplans (selecting one “perk” in Stand-Up, Ground, and Physical to create one gameplan totaling with 3 separate gameplans. Throughout your career youll unlock even more than the few available at first.

        CAREER:

Didn’t really mess around with this at all. I apologize. I did get a couple comments on tho, TUF IS MANDATORY. You cannot skip this. If you lose your fights you will be prompted to retry. They said that since they had no other orgs. This was their way to introduce “amateur fights” think of it like FNC amateur you had like 10 fights before you turned pro. Same thing.

        FIGHTER OVERALLS:

I apologize ahead of time I did not realize that there was different stats for fighters in mult weights. At first I was taking pics of all of them then phone died n had to write down the rest. Gus was my fault. Dropped the ball on him. Had to go off memory. Now that I think about it im glad there is. Haha but im sorry for not getting certain LHW who are also in mw. If you look at mult weight fighters that I did get the stats aren’t much different so take that as you will. Again im sorry.

Even with having all that time with the game I still felt like there was SO much more I wanted to do. It just didn’t feel like enough. There were more modes I wanted to push through and just more matchups I wanted to check out. Its so hard to try n sum up this game in a single review but overall I was blown away at the games look n feel. While there could be some improvement on certain things I think this is a damn good start for the series. Theres only one way to go from here.

IF YOU HAVE MORE QUESTIONS ASK AWAY. ILL TRY TO ANSWER THEM AS BEST I CAN
