Mamed Khalidov defeated Melvin Manhoef by Submission (Guillotine Choke)
A fight that promised action, ultimately delivered very little in the main event of KSW 23, as Khalidov subbed out Manhoef in the opening minutes of the first round. Khalidov was comfortable throwing power shots and pulling guard early As the fight went on Manhoef looked to find his way inside and gave up his neck in a clinch scramble. He looked to slam his way out of it briefly, but was unable to generate the leverage once he had Khalidov off the mat. The end was soon to follow.
For one of the few MW fights that had some heat coming into it outside the UFC, it was ultimately a disappointingly one-sided contest. It'd be nice to see Khalidov make his way stateside and there was a rumor of a Strikeforce contract shortly before the promotion went out of business. Given how well he earns at KSW and how little interest the UFC has in paying big money for unproven draws, it's likely he'll remain oversees for the foreseeable future.
Sean McCorkle defeated Marius Pudzianowski via Submission (Straight Armbar)
In a fight that was eerily reminiscent of his victory over Mark Hunt, Sean McCorkle whipped out his go-to stright armbar. Pudzianowski came out swinging, but got popped with a jab, went for a desparation takedown, and ended up on the bottom. It's hard to say this means much for McCorkle. It shouldn't mean anything, but HW is it's own thing. If nothing else it's the millionth example that muscular physique has zero meaning, but it won't stop people from watching the next time the Worlds Strongest Man steps into a ring.
Michael Materla defeated Kendall Groves via Unanimous Decision
The evenings third title fight saw Michael Materla defend his KSW middleweight title against former UFC fighter Kendall Grove for a unanimous decision victory. It was a back and forth affair that included a surprise 4th "sudden victory" round. Eventually the Pol moved to 19-3 and Grove fell to 17-13. Materla already has another fight scheduled, against Sebastian Risch at GMC 4 in Herne, Germany on July 6th.
Aslambek Saidov defeated Ben Lagman via Submission (Armbar)
KSW welterweight champion Aslambek Saidov took on challenger Ben Lagman in a wrestling dominant affair. Saidov controlled the fight throughout, threatening with keylocks and eventually switched from kimura to armbar for the tap in the second.
Karolina Kowalkiewicz defeated Marta Chojnoska via Submission (RNC)
Karolina Kowalkiewicz reversed a throw attempt early in the first round to get the rear naked choke and become the first women's flyweight champion (and women's champion in general) in KSW history. She improved to 3-0 with the win.
In the cards two remaining bouts Mateusz Gamrot defeated Mateusz Zawadzki via TKO and Luiz Ricardo Simon defeated Mateusz Piskorz via Unanimous Decision. KSW 24 is scheduled for September 28th in Lodz, Warsaw, Poland. Bloody Elbow will have all the card details as the come out.
